Hardy Bulbs

Right now, before the ground freezes, is a great time to add color to your garden. What I am talking about is planting hardy bulbs that will explode with color in your garden come spring and throughout the next year. It is late in the season, so bulbs are on sale now at up to 75% off. Here is a list of bulbs that are hardy in our area.

Autumn Crocus                      Colchicum species and hybrids

Botanical Tulip                       Tulipa tarda

Camas                                     Camassia cusickii, Camassia leichtlinii

Summer Snowflake                Leucojum aestivum

Tulip                                       Tulipa hybrids

Windflower                            Anemone blanda

Note:

Hardy bulbs need the freezing temperatures of winter to prepare them for bloom, so get them in the ground before the ground freezes.

In addition to the winter hardy bulbs listed above, there are numerous non-hardy bulbs available that may be bought and planted next spring. Non-hardy bulbs must be taken up in the fall and saved for reuse, or they can be discarded like annuals, and replaced the next year.
